Neighborhood Houses...an organization with a long, rich history
|
The Caroline Mission Rythym Band of the 1930s
|
In 1913, a group of community minded individuals canvassed the south side Lafayette area neighborhood to find out what the community's needs were. As a result, that year, Caroline Mission was established to help the working class and immigrant population address the issues of inadequate housing, lack of proper medical attention, and poor education for the children.
These beginnings resulted in the creation of the 501(c)(3) not for profit organization known as Neighborhood Houses. |
Neighborhood Houses is now comprised of three community centers in three distinct neighborhoods of the city of St. Louis. In addition to Caroline Mission, now located in the Gate District we operate: St. James Center in the College Hill Neighborhood and Dignity House in the Academy Neighborhood.
For 94 years, Neighborhood Houses has been providing services to economically disadvantaged children and families in the inner city of St. Louis. According to surveys of our children in our centers, 75% come from single-parent families, 95% of the children are African-American and 80% of the families earn less than $20,000.00 annually.
